Sigma's new DP-1 just might be the best point and shoot out their for image quality.
Here is Michael Reichmans review.

Look at the sample images from the sigma website.

Perhaps for image quality but the rest of it looks a little deficient.

Isn't image quality what you want? You won't have the adjustably of a DSLR, so there has to be some trade offs.
P&S cameras are probably what most consumers purchase. The manufacturers are going to spend a lot of time and money improving these platforms. DSLR isn't for everyone, so a good quality, affordable P&S will help drive the industry.
Now with that said, I have no idea what this particular camera will cost!

Yes image quality is what we are all after Mike. From reading the review from Mr I'm always right ( I'd like to know half what he does ) it seems its lacking in some of the features of the G9 and ricoh.
If I remember right and I may not , I think it was about $ 800.00

Ron, it is about $800 from Amazon, without the viewfinder which runs another
$149. Rounding off with a 2gig memory card and you're at a $1000. The lens
is what impresses me, wide-angle 28mm (35mm FF equiv). I dunno, I've seen
some impressive stuff with the Ricoh GX100, interesting to see if these cams
go down in price in a year or so.

For $1000 I would much rather get a DSLR, it would be a good deal for $500 or less. I like my $200 Sony, nice to just keep in the car.
Before long P&S will be the new SLR. Phone cams will be the new P&S.
who knows what they will do with the full body SLR's.
