I guess it really depends on what type of shots you want to take. Try using your kit lens at 50mm and see if it gives you the right reach to frame the pics you want to take. The 50 f/1.8 is probably the best bang for the buck for sharpness. color and speed...but that doesn't necessarily mean it will work well for aquarium pics.

i wouldn't bother with the 50mm 1.8 for fish pics - if you want i could always shoot a couple of sample shots, since i've got a 50mm 1.8 around. Its a nice lens all round, nice and sharp (beautifully sharp actually), and also nice and fast too :)

Well the one advatage using a fast lens like the 50 f/1.8 is the very nice blur effect for the back/foreground since the DOF will be very narrorw!

It's a very inexpensive lens and if you take portraits, it might be a very good lens to own...on a 1.6 crop camera like the 300d, you'll get the same field of view as a 85mm lens on a full frame or film camera.... and 85mm is the classic portrait focal length.

I'm personally a huge fan of mine, I find it useful in places were you don't have control over light and it has seen alot of use at the zoo. Where possible I prefer to use my sigma 28-70 but otherwise the 1.8 works great.
