ed - if you want to get into some macro work - get yourself a set of extension tubes - kenko make a set for $120 thereabouts, don't affect image quality - you just lose a bit of light for each tube.

a cheap good quality way - the tubes reduce your minimum focusing distance - and the 50mm 1.8 you have makes for a good macro lens with the tubes :)
