Hey Benny, I'm planning to get these(corydoras) for my new planted-10 gallon tank. How big do they grow and how many you think I can fit in a 10 g with other fish? Oh..., and yes, very good pics, fish look great!

Thanks Gordeez! Cories are fairly co-operative fishes when it comes to photography.

The camera is a D60 from Canon. Now obsolete. The lens is a 100mm macro.

Hi Teeth&Fins,

Cories differ in sizes according to species. Smallest would be 3 cm or just over an inch and some of the larger ones will be close to 12 cm or almost 5 inches. On the average, most cories you see in the market would be around 2 to 2.5 inch in size.

Avoid the sharp nose ones if you have foreground plants like glossostigma unless they are already established. They tend to dig a little. Riccia on stainless steel mesh does not go well with cories either unless the edges of the mesh is already smoothened.

I believe your 10 gal should be US. Gal, which I'm not too familiar with. However, 60 Litres, or 15 Imp Gal. should hold 8 cories to their full size comfortably.

Cories are fun additions in your tank. Hope to see your pictures of them soon!

Great pictures Benny.

First 3 are nice but personally I prefer shots w/ flash used from above. At least your examples look more natural.

Are you diffusing flash from above ?

I'm collecting for Canon 10D [smilie=bowdown.gif]

Thanks Jay,

All the pictures are taken with flash from above as can be seen by the shadow details. And I put a piece of white paper over the flash to diffuse it.

I agree that overhead lighting is easier for natural looking picture. Also, you can control the background by varying the aperture and shutter speed to "blacken" out the background.

Here is an example. The back of the tank is actually a white wall. But I used higher shutter speed and a smaller aperture. The background almost disappeared.

I'm collecting for Canon 10D [smilie=bowdown.gif]

I was hoping to upgrade to this but put it off when I realise that there is a limit to the sharpness that you can get with this baby (as with D60 and 300D).

I can't quite recall the details, but I'm sure a search on dpreview will yield some interesting read.

Basically, the size of each pixel on the CMOS will restrict how small the details can get and thus sharpness. This means that beyond F11 (or F13), the image starts to degrade (although still acceptable to most casual photographers). So when you are trying to shoot at 1/180 at F22, and 1/500 at F13, you may find the later to be sharper, not taking the Depth of Field into consideration.

At this point, only 1Ds does not have this problem, but the price is another problem altogether.

Benny,

Thats interesting. I didn't hear about this.

Friend of mine, professional photographer, is proud owner of 10D and never complained about performance. I never used DSLR in the past but once I layed hands on one, it was just automatic. Good old days with SLR 35mm. No problems with focus, no wait .

Thanks for the tip.

Nice.

Are you shooting pictures in specific holding/photo container or those are taken in official setup ?.

Honestly, these guys look similar to me. It's hard for me to ID each in the LFS. What's the keys to ID them?

benny
09-01-2004, 11:31 PM
All of these are shot in "photo tanks" ranging from 30 cm to 10 cm, depending on the size of the fish. Pretty make shift set up just for taking pictures. Can never shoot them in the actual holding tanks as there's too many fishes.

As for ID, where do I begin....Just my luck to be interested in a genus that has more than 300 species, many of which is unnamed and lots of confusion to their actual identity.

More to come for sure.

An Imperial gallon is approx 1.2 US gallons but for calculating basic carrying capacity of tanks, e.g. 1 in. of fish per gallon, the inch per gallon rule of thumb is so rough that it doesn't really matter whether you use UK or US gallons. Corys are sociable fish and like to hang out with their own kind, although they socialize well with other Cory species too, so it is best to get at least two and preferably more of each species when you stock your tank.

Beautiful picture!

I think you have the ID spot on. Corydoras sp. aff leopardus C130. Have you check witht he folks at planetcatfish? If there wasn't a dorsal marking, I would have guessed that it's Corydoras sp. C91 instead.
