I got to shoot my Squadron's recognition ceremony today as my unit's Adjunct Photographer. The 694th IG has a Nikon D100 they let all the unit's use for functions, and I was in heaven. They had a tamron 24-136 Macro on it, and a VERY large battery. It was the first time I had used a D100, but the thing was SO easy to use in full auto, that I had to fool around in aperture and shutter priority modes :) Everything from the WB to the DOF was sharp and everything I had hoped for. The metering was a dream, and shutter lag was non-existent.
Makes me want the D70 even more now that I can get it for $760 with a kit lens!

How do you find the quality of the tamron 24-136 Macro?

Tony,
There you go. Another one blinded by Nikon's performance. Now collect that money, sell your Sony and buy D70 or D 100.
BTW. There is no way you will buy that camera for ~$700 at legit place. Check resellerratings first.

I found the macro very nice, I used it's minimum focal range only a few times, as my use of it was limited to the function, but it performed flawlessly for the types of shots I was doing, which included indoor, outdoor, and cloudy shots. It was a f/3.5 lens I believe.
The D100 will be mine someday!

I'm stoked about this stuff, dunno what to do about my next camera, and I have $700 laying around, haha.

I cleaned up this topic a bit since were are on the same page :)
Well,
I would suggest and save up for new one unless you are 100% sure that used one is OK to use. I love my Nikon D70 and wouldn't exchange it for anything else, well maybe D200 (hopefully coming out soon) or high models.
One thing that I don't like about D100 is that there is no Commander Mode, at least from what I was told. With D70 I can setup SB-800 flash as Remote and body in Commander Mode and say Good-Bye to off-shoe cables. This is EXTREMELY helpful in our aquatic profession.
But either way you can't go wrong with either model. Good luck.

Actually, there's a way that you can do it on the D100 (either DIY or get some accessories from Nikon) :cheesy:

Well, exactly - DIY or additional accessories => $$$
I'm sure you will be happy with D100. I was going back and forth between D70 and D100. I have read a lot of reviews and personal feedbacks and without going into each specs I learned that there is not much difference between these two. Final decision was made after I found out that I can get D70 Body + Lens for $1200 were D100 is still around ~$1400 for Body only. D70 came with 18-70mm lens which would set me back $600 if I was to buy it alone.
I knew that if I was going to buy D100 body, I would need flash, approximately 2 lenses and at the end DIVORCE :cheesy:

Divorce!! No way we will ever promote that in photography man
I am indeed happy with my D100 right now but I got it way back when it just launches and the price is much more higher than today :( I do agreed that the accessories cost $$$ but lucky for me, I can use it together with my old flash which doesn't support IR. My next target will likely be a D2H Since I am more into bird photography now and I need the speed and buffer size that D2H can deliver
