Hey all, i use photobucket to host my images, but most of them are not small enough for me to post up here is there any good programs out there to help me get them to the right size?

I believe IrfanView allows you to resize (including batch resizes). I've never used it, but as far as free image programs go, this is wildly popular. Try getting it here (http://www.download.com/3001-2192-10311994.html).

Irfanview is a good advice.
Additionally, there is a trial version of Photoshop CS:

This version is fully functional, but expires after 30 days.
Perhaps you like the software... but i wouldīt use it, if you only want to resize your pics.

I discovered another software, similar to Irfanview, that is called XnView.
http://www.xnview.com/
With this nice piece of software it is possible not only to downsize images but to sharpen gradually as well! Many beginners forget about this.
As far as i know, with Irfanview you can only sharpen or not.
For people not be able to spend much money on software, this could be a good choice, because itīs Freeware!
It has the following features:
Import about 400 graphic file formats
Export about 50 graphic file formats
Multipage TIFF, Animated GIF, Animated ICO support
IPTC, EXIF
Resize
Copy/Cut/Crop
Adjust brigthness, contrast...
Modify number of colors
Apply filters (blur, average, emboss, ...)
Apply effects (lens, wave, ...)
Fullscreen mode
Slide show
Picture browser
Batch convert
Thumbnail create
Screen capture
Contact Sheet create
Multi-page file create (TIFF, DCX, LDF)
TWAIN support (Windows only)
Print support (Windows only)
Drag & Drop support (Windows only)
44 languages support (Windows only)
...
Andreas,
I'm sorry for hijacking the thread here but could you explain what you mean by "sharpen gradually"? Are you supposed to sharpen the photograph after you resize it? I have noticed that after I resize an image it loses quality as if it's losing data.

Are you supposed to sharpen the photograph after you resize it?
yes! Scaling down digital images will always lead to a loss of sharpness

If this is a dumb question, it is because I am a greenhorn. I thought scaling down images would sharpen them and scaling them up would make them more grainy, like enlarging classic silver film images. Not so??

If you have a 2288x1712 image that is crystal clear to the smalest pixel you can enlarge it at least/almost double. it softens the image for web viewing, but shouldn't effect the printout, unless you have a hyper sensitve printer. if your image is not clear to start with, it will make things worse.
scaling down, you lose detail, it is bound to happen, because you are removing pixels. I imagine it is related to the computer not being able to think, but removing pixels in a preordered method. if you sharpen, even if only an unsharp mask, you can bring back the nice crisp edges, provided they were there to start.

Thanks, when you think about it, it does seem clear. Moral: think first.
For XP users, I recommend the Microsoft power toy. It is pretty cool for resizing quickly.
You can download it from
