Man. I thought I had a good chance in this POTM contest. I was hoping for a lot of senery shots that were maybe just a little bit off. But I looked at all the photos today and they are great. There are soem super great shotes in there to. Not looking good for me. Oh well I will keep my fingers crossed.

Wow! I think this is harder then the regular POTM. There is so many different catagories. It will be interesting to see who wins! Glad to see that there are enough pics to have a POTM! Can't wait until I can feel comfortable submitting some pics!

Seeing these pictures makes me think maybe you should have two contests for non-aquatic. You should have an animal or pet POTM contest for all not aquatic animals and you should have another one just for shots of scenery.
The contest right now is way too broad. I originally thought it was only for other pets or animal shots. But it is for everything.

On the Canon forum at DPReview, they have themed contests, where the winner of the previous contest must select the subject or target for the next contest. It's a neat idea and works well there. That said, I think the current setup is the best way to elicit the most participation on this forum. If things start getting too complicated too quickly, submissions and participation might drop off. I say let's just let the non-A POTM thing ride for a bit and see how it evolves. Thanks for the new contest mods/admins!
PS - I think I see four potential winners. It will be interesting to see how thinly the votes are spread...
Agree Nicholo. Jason, a lot of our users do landscape and wildlife photography, as well as Macro. We created the second contest to showcase and promote these "more traditional" forms of photography. This is freestyle. I have seen the DPReview "theme" contests, but that is only possible with a HUGE base of possible entrants. WE are not there yet :)
As far as the contest, I did not think the quality would be this good, remember our first POTM Aquatic, it was quite "not there yet" comparing to the pics we have these days.

PM me paradise and tell me what pictures you like and the reasons why. Tell me what makes them strong pictures. I want to learn.
jason, we'll wait till the contest is over. We'll probably have a POTM Discussion thread, just like we did for the Aquatic POTM this month.

That's a great idea except not everyone has access to things the theme may require at all times :(
Better to stick with a general contest until it evolves into something everyone can participate in at all times IMO!
Tony
i've seen these types of competitions before, and it is nothing specific. they pick a subject like "mechanism" or "religion" etc. NOT like "beach" or "mountains". you have to kinda use some sense when choosing a topic. obviously everyone cannot take pictures of surfers etc. but everyone can take pictures of the sky or people etc, the fun part is seeing how creative people can get.

All good ideas. I still think you shoudl set up a non-aqadic pet POTM contest where the pics must be of other pets or animals that are nto fish.
But I also liek the idea of changing the subject each month and doing that type of thing.

Jasno..., see Paradise's explanation of why a themed contest would be difficult to pull off, at least as I've described it from DPReview. Do you have any input specifically about why this is a good or poor explanation?
i agree. great ideas. but since we have such small participation, i think we are at the right stage in non-aquatic photo contest progression.
baby-steps. there are always other places to participate in different contests. i think it's great to have had a non-aquatic section to begin with, seeing how this is "primarily" an aquatic photography forum.
Jason, this place is not your typical Pet forum. We are a bit more serious and adult and having a PET competition is not as important as having a Quality contest. We already have an Aquatic contest, and btw, it's not LIMITED to fish :) That just happens to be the most popular subject matter :) What matters here is not what kind of fish or pet it is, but the quality of the photo, the presentation, the "captured moment in time". I like the idea of a themed contest, but it will have to wait till the traffic here is A LOT better.
Help that happen, if everyone does something :)

I understand it is about the photography and I understand it is abotu the picuters nto the subject. But in reality the subject of the picture and the picture itself are what wins. You can have an exceptional picture and have it of a really crappy subject and well nobody will vote for it.
So in reality they go hand in hand.
All I was sayign is that yo uare makign the contest for very braod for the non-aquadic contest that it is in reality almost too vast. I understand that you want to build up a base on the site but when you do you should really think about doign various different subject matters.
It will happen of course. I really like the "winner picks the next contest subject" idea. That works, with a huge base of users. We only had 9 entries (plus mine :) ) and only 23 votes so far, WAAAAY too early.
