Here's one of yesterday's posts I see that the spelling is still wrong, so this should draw your attention to it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks.
And when you are setting up the new system don't forget this which I have just noticed.

AQUATIC PHOTOGRAPHY - CRITIQUE
Start a thread if you would like Constructive critisism of your photos.

Just some constructive criticism of the spelling,

Roy it may or may not be a problem. Did the forum have subforums, and if yes, did it have posts in the actual forum itself? It sounds like it was a forum w/JUST subforums and no posts in the actual forum, so it had nothing to mark read. Give me the actual forum so that I could test it.

Are certain boards only available to certain members? I'm looking at the post made by Jay in regards to rental equipment, and the only options available is to edit your posts. The other posting rules (post new threads, post replies, post attachments) are all set to NOT. I can understand the post attachments, but I find it odd that no new threads or replies can be posted (whereas the edit your posts can be done).

Ibn,

Problem was fixed. I set those forums as CLOSED and forgot to OPEN them to public. Now they are open and you should be able to create New Topics and Reply.

Happy posting and sorry for inconvenience.

Andreas,
This is VB standard. On another boards there is a Reply button which has the same function as Quote. Basically you are replying to PM with automatic Quote.

Hope you don't mind

The "Main Page" and "Archive" buttons at the foot of all pages do not work. THey return the following error message:

Bad Gateway
The following error occurred:
[code=DNS_HOST_NOT_FOUND] The host name was not found during the DNS lookup. Contact your system administrator if the problem is not found by retrying the URL.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please contact the administrator.

All the other buttons on this line are OK

Yes it was in the index.
But you should still be able to mark the forums as read. (Atleast in the forum we are using)

In the User CP section on the 'subscribed threads' page there is a legend at the bottom showing what the different colored 'flags' (rectangles) mean. Both the yellow and the red flags have the same description "More than 11 replies or 100 views"

On the main board on the thread pages themselves the yellow and red flags are described as 'hot topics with new posts' and 'hot topics with no new posts'.

These different descriptions are not necessarily at variance with one another, but if the descriptions were standardized things would be clearer.

Kapenta,

Good observation.

Yellow - Hot thread with new posts
Red - Hot thread with no new posts

We are going to change:

Yellow - More than 11 replies or 100 views, New posts
Red - More than 11 replies or 100 views, NO New posts

This is custom made template so there are some glitches.

Jay and KKid, the problem is that those descriptions are assigned by software and are not changable. You are not supposed to look at those, just read the legend, which is clearly marked as (Hot w/posts) and (Hot w/out posts).

Yeah, i would love more detailed descriptions, but that is not possible. Also, keep in mind that the numbers in the definition (11, 100) are flexible and will be changed by us once the forum traffic increases, or you will see every post as "hot" and that is just not right. The "HOTness" of the post depends on it's relevant performance comparing to the other forums. For now, this is the correct number, but that will change as the membership increases and post counts in the threads go up.

In the forums sometimes I can see the pics, sometimes just IMG and URL codes.
e.g. In FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHY I can see Molino's 'Devil lives in' or Byce's 'Clamshell Baby' or Draco's 'Couple of Primrose Pics', but in Jay Luto's 'Bronx Zoo' or Draco's 'Dragonfish' I just see the IMG and URL codes. What is puzzling is that others can see those last two examples since the threads show several replies and comments on the pics.

This is one of the glitches which took place during forum transfer. APF v.1.0 had a feature which basically took for example 600pixel wide picture and made a thumb out of it which had a direct link to original file. We implemented this to save loading time. Now APF v2.0 is a lot faster so we don't need that feature. Unfortunately pictures which were linked through "thumb MOD" are broken and need to be edited. Just copy and paste the link with the following code ...url text....

Thanks, I didn't realize that others knew about this fix, that's what puzzled me when I read that they could see the pix and I couldn't.

OK...was trying to fill in some background info so I went to the MOD Team page. Decided to look at the profile of one of the mods by clicking on the Profile link and it pointed to a generic profile page, probably left over from the old board.

I inadvertently left 3 post that should be in this thread under S&C. You may want to move them. Additionally, I made a $25 payment at PayPal for an APF Gold Contribution and never received a receipt from them which I usually get by email within a minute of any payment made. Did you folks receive the money??? - Frank/Guppyman®

hey frank. Thank you for your generous contribution to APF. We really appreciate it. The money contributed goes DIRECTLY to the site, as evidenced in the Gallery/Web hosting that we just announced and in only 4 days, by the new POTM software we are about to unveil, which will BLOW You away!!!! No more Polls where you choose JUST one !!!

Thanks for all your suggestions, all have been excellent. Oh and the banenr for your site is in FINAL development. I can actually get you one, if we can replace it later w/a finished model.

Additionally, I'm happy to contribute $$$ wherever I see complete dedication to the job at hand. Although just getting up to speed with the relaunch, I find the potential unlimited and the people involved to be first rate. I'm proud to be a member and will always contribute in any way I can to help make your efforts successful. Also, I hope to start posting pics soon. Thanks for the thanks. - Frank/Guppyman®

Please take this as constructive criticism...

I find the structure with the forums quite confusing (and I work professionally as a graphic and web designer that loves logical solutions to design problems and takes easy usability of a site as primary design device!).

What I mean, is that say for example, under the forum "Photo Hardware" there are three sub forums and a threaded area down below the top three sub forum areas. To me this is quite confusing and illogical as I think there are too many levels to click through. A better solution would be to have "photo hardware" and once you click on that you have a choice of four areas (which includes a general area)... or even better - list all forums back at the root level.

Thinking out loud... a suggestion could be:
----
aquatic photo gallery (and have the critique level in the one forum (don't create a sub forum) people just specify if they want to be critiqued in post title
----
General photo gallery (this is good as has no sub levels!)
----
POTM contests - Title only (non clickable) and under this at root level have aquatic and non aquatic (with a sticky in each of rules and conditions; and a second sticky with archive pics from each)
----
photography 101 (all good here)
----
photography news (again all OK)
----
photo hardware (again a non clickable title) with the camera specific forums and a general hardware forum lsited at root level
---
etc. etc.

Just some observations and trying to help out with constructive assistance.
I think to have all the forums listed at root level would be best solution... it may make a long page, but it will eliminate the need to click through to the desired forum two or three times.

Saying all that though, I must comment that this is a great forum... very informative and a great bunch of knowledgable people! :)

just my thoughts!

Steve, one of the reasons (not main but one of them) we switched recently from phpBB system to the VB system is that it has ability of nesting forums. I have noticed that people for the most part dont like scrolling through 5 page long main page to get to subsections.

The idea of a "general" subfolder is not a bad one, we have kept all "general" type threads in the main section, but it's worth considering.

Some things, like making the main forum un-clickable if you have subforums, are not possible in vb. You have to see the forum view.

I appreciate your input, and we value it a WHOLE LOT, specially coming from a pro. The forum in it's new form is less than a month old, we are adding more stuff every day (literally) and changing it based on usability and feedback from users, just ask Jessica :-)
