"Novice" may be putting it a little strongly. Complete neophyte may be a better description. I have never used a remote flash and I'm just now figuring out what ISO and "Stop down" mean.

I am trying to figure out the difference between the SB600 and SB800.

and the SB800 kit listed here for several hundred more:

I'm purchasing a flash to be used on the D70.

Thanks for the help.

Erin,

You don't nee that combo. You can get SB 800 for $300 here -> http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=300467&is=USA

I don't think you need Quantum Turbo Battery and Charger , just yet.

The Turbo Battery is a Heavy duty portable power source for shoe and handle mount flashes. It has the fastest recycling and the most shots per charge of any Quantum Battery. It lets you choose between ultimate speed or economy mode for maximum flash capacity.

hi erin, while both of these are good flashes... i would recommend the sb-800 (http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/SB800_techniques.pdf). it's the best one nikon makes, and you won't be able to wish you bought the better one. the sb-600 from what i understand is a decent flash. if you did go with the sb-600 i would recommend purchasing a stofen omnibounce (included with the sb-800), and for remote use - a speedlight stand with a tripod mount (also included with the sb-800). also, some good NiMH rechargable batteries. honestly, you might be planning to have more than one flash, so you might consider getting both. but for multiple flash setups you'll need to have the sb-800 as a master. i bought an sb-800 and i feel like it was a good buy. i do plan on buying an sb-600 later on, i just felt like the sb-800 should come first. i hope you're happy with whatever you go with.

Thank you both for the advice. I bought the SB800 as soon as I checked out Jay's link.

Hir0, I was LMAO when I read "you won't be able to wish you bought the better one." I knew I'd be doing exactly that if I bought the SB600.
