Will the 17-40L be good enough to take tank shots,
or will I be better served buying the 500D
for my 70-200IS?

Thanks

i think you should be able to get away with either of these two lenses. i used my 70-200 the other night for a few test shots from about 7 feet away on a monopod. i find that my fish are less nervous when i'm that far away. i don't think a closeup lens is needed unless you are shooting small fish and need to get closer.

Actually, it depends on the size of the tank and how much room you have to move backwards.

Otherwise, suggestions and comments given will be not of much help.

Do take note. If you can shoot your tank further away, it will look sharper and have more depth. Only folks with space restrictions uses wide angle lenses. And when shooting from far, the 500D close up lens is useless.

here is one i did from across the room with the 70-200 nikkor. i know the shadows are a little dark, but i think 70-200 does ok.
