I've finally started to look into buying my own digital camera (been using a Nikon Coolpix 950 from work) and I'd like to get something that has a decent macro mode. Right now, for the money and feature set, the Canon S50 is the tp runner...but from reviews, they say it only has average macro performance.

Here's a pic, as an example of the pics I'd like to take, that I took with the nikon without the macro mode:

This photo is actually great. How do you want it to be upgraded? Do you want to take even closer up shot?

I'd like to get more closeups (macro) shots... I just don't know how good the Canon Powershot S50's lens is. My best friend has a S30, so I'm going to borrow that and try it out for a bit before I decide. I wish the 2nd generation of prosumer DSLRs were out already...I'd get one of those and a less than the S50 capable P&S digi cams... but the DSLRs are still a little too pricey for me...and I'd rather learn how to take better shots with a less expensive camera. I've also seen some adapters that will allow for the addition of 37mm lenses to the S50...so that might be something to try out for now.

if you want really good macro - i'd say stick to a nikon coolpix if possible - the coolpix cameras are well known for their macro capabilities.
