Is it a male dwarf Altolamprologus? I used to breed the 'Sumbu' race years ago. My male was cream and brown, not yellow like this one - I presume that the shot does not have a strong yellow cast.
It's a perfectly respectable photo, but not very exciting - hence the lack of comments. It might look better with a little more contrast and a touch of unsharp masking to make the fish stand out from the background a little more.
As you put this in the Critique section, I will add another point: one of the differences between a decent photo and a really good one is depth of field, if you can get everything sharp it makes the photo special. It is relatively easy with a fish like this, because it usually moves fairly slowly and it tends to swim 'broadside on' to danger - you simply have to be very patient and wait until the whole body of the fish is parallel to the camera, so both head and tail are in focus at the same time. Writing it like this makes it sound so easy - which it isn't - but it's worth the effort.

In addition to Alan's comments, I think more light will allow a higher shutter speed and thus enhance the critical sharpness.
In terms of composition and presentation, I think it's a great effort if it's your first picture. I find it very clean and fairly natural. There are loads of pictures with all kind of piping and filtration gadgets totally visible in the background.

Sorry guys - not my "first picture", but rather my first one that i have put up on this site. I have gone from using a fuji point and shoot fine pix to a Nikon DSLR in recent weeks and am learning how to use it (slowly), so I guess this was the first picture with my new camera that i liked.
Thank you both for your critique.
It is an Altolamprologus compressiceps "gold". I know people will cringe because i have not include a locality in the name - but this is how i was sold the fish, so i would not want to make a guess as to the location. Nice fish though. Fascinating to watch them hunt fry from other species in the display tank
