I recently discovered that I have a Promaster Spectrum 7, 1.7x teleconverter from my 35mm Nikon kit. I simply forgot I had it because I haven't used the camera in years. I checked the lens chart in the D70 manual and evidentally it can be used for M mode shots with restrictions to certain features.
Should I consider using it with my 50mm 1.8d to get closeups? Or is it too inferior for decent results?

Try it and you can be the judge of that!
We look forward to the pictures for comparison.

So I won't have to worry about causing any residual damages to the D70 "brains"? You know, the cpu stuff and all that more techincal information that I'm not very sharp on.
Shouldn't be a problem. Are there any CPU contacts from the TC?

No
Should still be fine. Test it out. Just be aware that you will have to go full manual on it.

I just tried some shots and they weren't all that great. My main problem is I'm so dependent on af because of my vision. I wear these tri-focal glasses and by the time I can see if I'm in focus the shot's gone. Also, when looking through view finder, there seems to be a very faint fog. I'm sure this teleconverter is not good quality glass. I'll play with it and see where it may come in handy.
Thanks for your help.
Might take awhile to get use to it. Give it a bit more time and see if you could play with it . Post some pictures so that we can see what kind of results you're getting.
Haven't used that TC myself, but here's some shots from someone who was using it on a Tamron 70-210mm 2.8: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic2/129469/0#1048564

As per your request. Here's a sampling using the 1.7 teleconverter with the 50mm 1.8d...

The last shot is a result of a major battle going on the last 48 hours between three dominant peacocks. This guy seems to be losing real bad. He's coming out tonight after dinner. Find a hospitol for him for a few weeks.
