Here's a shot I tried using the Promaster 1.7x teleconverter with the nikon 50mm 1.8d. I have to shoot it using the manual focus and I'm usually guessing if I'm in focus because of my poor eysight. I doubt if I'll use it much because I rely on the af too much. Anyway, do you think it's worth using for closeups?

Bobby, honestly I dont see much difference, in fact, it looks a bit out of focus. I think a good overhead flash is the best way to get sharpness, and 50mm lens is good enough by itself. If you ever want true MACRO, the 100mm 2.8 macro (I think nikon makes one just like Canon's, or is it 105 Macro) is great but pricey. That is what I use for my close up stuff. It's quite impressive.

I agree. You may have missed an earlier thread I had on trying the TC. A couple guys suggested I try it out , and post a couple shots. I had this TC from my 35mm kit and just thought I'd give it a try. I have a serious problem using the manual focus because of my glasses. To get closeup shots I have to rely on af...can't with the TC... manual only. My plans include the Tamron 90 or the Nikon 105 for the closeup shots I'm looking for.
Thanks for the input.
It's gonna take some getting used to. Even with the Tamron or the Nikon macros, you'll be looking at doing some manual focusing. There's a pretty steep learning curve, but after awhile, you'll get used to it (start rocking back and forth to focus). I'm still learning with macro shots, since both of my lenses are used on manual settings (old 55mm micro Nikkor and Tamron 90mm with Nikon mount, not DI). BTW, I also wear glasses, but not bifocals.
Here's one that I took awhile back with the old micro Nikkor:
