Ordering the SB-800 wireless flash. What extras do I need to buy, allowing it to be used wireless remote?
Do I need either of the coiled cords? And if I do, which one?
Buydig.com has it for $295 plus a $25 rebate until 3/31. The cords are $65 & $90.

There is no need for additional items. All you need is D70 and SB 800.
People scratch their heads and can't figure how to set Nikon D70 w/ SB-800 wireless. Even Nikon's step-by-step manual is not clear here.
This is fool-proof step-by-step. Let me know if you have additional questions.
Flash setup
#1. Turn your flash ON
#2. Press SEL and hold it until you get the to Menu
#3. Scroll left / right / up / down until you get Master / Remote / SU-4 step which shows on the right of the screen
#4 Press SEL and you will enter Master / Remote / SU-4 option
#5 Scroll up or down until you get REMOTE
#6 Press SEL
#7 Press ON/OFF button
#8 Not you should see BIG sign on the display - REMOTE and 2 boxes CH and Group
#9 by clicking SEL and left and right you want to select:
x CH - 3
x GROUP - A
This is the only way you will get the flash to work wireless
Camera setup
#1 Get in your MENU
#2 select CSM Menu - (Pen Icon)
#3 select option 19 in detail section of the CSM menu
#4 you will have 3 options TTL / Manual / Commander Mode
#5 select Commander Mode --> TTL
You have to have your on-board flash open as trigger. It will not add to overall exposure so don't worry.
You are DONE !!! Don't forget to reset your settings if wireless is not in use.

Thanks Jay. I knew you would come to my rescue. I didn't think I needed the cables, it is called WIRELESS...duh. But, thought I'd rather be safe than sorry. It's all still new to me. :-D

Hey Jay, since we're on the topic of SB-800 wireless:
If we have to use the on-board flash as a trigger, (& assuming we're shooting the tank head-on), would the flash from the camera give that 'all dreaded' reflection on the glass?
Just curious ...
the flash on-camera fires to trigger the speedlight which then prefires several times before the shutter opens. the prefires are letting the camera read exposure - it gives the on-camera flash time to go out. keep in mind though, that the light from the flash can cause reflections off of your clothes or camera etc.

Thanks hir0!
Hehe, the SB-800 has me drooling - I'm "more-or-less" decided on a Nikon D70, so I'm gonna get myself an SB-800 to go with it. ^_^

This is the only thing I'm not comfortable with compared to other systems. But nonetheless, it's great to have remote flash builted in.
By the way, do you guys know how many flash units can the D70 control?
Cheers,

i've been looking into getting a sync cord to eliminate the preflashes. they sometimes startle the fish. does anyone know if the cord does in fact remove the preflashes?
using the sb-800 as a master you are supposed to be able to use the master + 3 groups set as slaves with any number of speedlights. i've read that you can use one group of slaves using the d70 in commander mode. the number of slaves is not clear.
Not sure how many it can control. I'm awaiting the 3rd SB-800 to get here, but so far, it has no troubles firing both of them remotely.

Correct me if I'm wrong:
By having a master flash (such as the SB-800) on the hot-shoe or a sync cable, the master flash is able to control a group of slave flashes using IR (therefore, eliminating the pre-flashes).
(Haha, read about this in 'those days', but never got to trying it) :)
i couldn't say for sure. Ibn you have more than one can you try it?
I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see how the one on the hotshoe and one off works.
Just tested it out tonight and having one on the hotshoe (set to master) and the other on remote. No preflashes firing, so this could work out well, although you will have to shoot at an angle, otherwise you'll get that dreaded glare of the flash in the pic.
Here's the setup with both of them as remotes:

Both firing towards ceiling to light the room up:

nice ballhead i'm jealous
Hehe, thanks. Just got it in the mail yesterday and have been playing with it the entire night (amazing how smooth it glides). The sad part about it is that I can't even use it at this moment. The Kirk L-bracket that I ordered doesn't ship out until Monday, and until then, I'll have to sit there and just look at it.
I was amazed at how well the one flash on the hotshoe and on off worked for the pair of SB-800s. The only problem with the setup is having to take the pictures at an angle. It's much more convenient to take pictures at a perpendicular to the front of the tank. I should have ordered a cord from B&H with this last order to test it out...
