These were taken using manual focus - but i think i need more practice. Its been a while since i was using an SLR. :-o

Well they are a bit dark. What type of lighting? And is the first one w/flash, the rest w/out?

Did you use direct flash for all of these (and clone out the eye highlights to confuse us :-))?

I wouldn't worry too much about the focus problem, it'll get better with practice. Good tank lighting does help, even if you're using flash for the actual exposure. On the other hand, silvery fishes with on-camera flash are a problem, diffusion may help a little - try a paper tissue taped over the flash, but you will lose some light. Getting the flash off the camera is the best solution.

I recognise the fish in the first shot as Ectodus decampsii (I hope the spelling is OK) - but I don't know the second, which is very beautiful, what is it?

Except the pointing snout i would think this is a Callochromis species.
*confused*

Exactly what I thought, the anal fin marking is just like C. pleurospilus; but the head shape reminds me of Ctenochromis horei.

Ectodus descampsii - Alan

second fish is a Callochromis stappersi "rasberry head" - i call him "Dr sparkles". Very pretty fish.

On cam flash used for all these shots. A few different settings/intensities. The only eye adjustment i made was an adjustment in #1 using close and blur.

:-o Ooops, nearly got that spelling right. I've never seen a stappersi - isn't it nice! I guess that the direct flash doesn't do it justice and that it's a pretty fast mover, judging by your focus problems. It might be worth trying something like squidfish's slave flash set-up, if you look at his previous posts.
