Been putting a bit more thought into my cropping in order to emphasize certain aspects of the photo (mostly thanks to Benny's massive improvement on my gourami shot with a simple crop) lately and I think I've hit a really good composition on this shot. Didn't do any major photoshopping but there were some water particles so if the photoshopping is terribly evident please say so. Other than that, all other comments are also greatly appreciated, be as brutal as you like since criticism helps me along the path to better work.

Great composition and focus on the eyes! The only thing I'd change is to get rid of the green on the side of the fish that's reflected from the plants.

Over all it's a photo I'd like to take the time to really look at. Good job!

heh, I guess that's why it's always good to get other opinions because not everyone envisions the shot the same way the photographer does ;)

The green on the side of the fish was actually my goal, the thing I was trying to capture was the way the scales pick up the coloring of it's surroundings to camoflage the fish. So the green blends in with the background, and the shallow DOF was used to accentuate the impression of coming out of ambush.

Not that I disagree with you, I did in fact ask for opinions, and if it wasn't effective in the sense I thought it would be I want to hear it. Thanks for the input

Agree, a really nice shot, great " just enough " DOF on it too. The green does not bother me, it's a nice contrast. The plants are a bit overexposed and could use some of that "Alan de-greening magic". Check out the tutorial in the articles section on de-foresting your background :-)

Ah, thanks Ed. I'm a master at missing the obvious ;) The lights in there are 3 watts per gallon, so the plants really do glow in real life, so you can appreciate how I missed that.

It should be updated now

That took care of such a bright green on the side of the fish, too! ;-) I like it much better. :-D

Hey Richard, give me a link to the original file, I will look at it. It looks ok here. is it a RAW file processed ?

your timing is pretty good Ed, after posting that I messed around with some options in psp and found that I had the compression set at something other than "lowest compression, best quality" for who knows what reason. Reuploaded and changed the URL and It's worked out now far as I can see, the funny thing is that I've been processing my images like that for quite some time and losing quality as a result. Woops
