Is the Nikkor 6 closeup lens that Aaron is referring to similiar to a teleconverter filter? And, can the D70 be properly used shooting af in manual mode with the nikon closeup? I already have 1.7 TC and the D70 manual explains that when it is used you can't shoot autofocus with accurate results.

The TC attaches between the body and lens, versus the close-up filter which screws into the front lens element (similar to UV, CPs, etc.). TC increases the magnification by moving the lens further away, whereas the filter cuts down the minimum focusing distance (at least that the way I understand it). In fact, from what I read, with the 6T attached, the maximum distance that you can be away from the subject is about a foot.

I'm interested in what was the focal length that Aaron was shooting with his 70-300mm since the 6T was designed to be used with lens in the 70-210mm range.

As for whether or not it work, I'm not sure. I know that John McFadden, on FM, uses the 500D on his 70-200mm VR lens with great results. The D70 with the 1.7x TC can be used on AF, so I don't see why it wouldn't work with the 6T. Only one way to find out is to test it out for yourself. Take the setup to you camera store and see if you can try it out (mine won't let me mount anything on the camera...), or you can see if they'll let you rent it for testing purposes.

I didnt see this before, but heres my reply.

Im shooting with the 6T and 70-300mm, but Im not using anything higher than 200mm. Most of the time Ill have it down to 100mm cuz at 200mm, its way too close (unless Im shooting fry or other non-fish objects).

I do use autofocus, but its really slow. I usually set the focal length to 100mm (or whatever I want it at), and then autofocus. Even then, your still going to have to move the camera back and forwards to focus correctly.

500d with 70-200 the working distance is about 18 inches. with the 250d it's about 10 inches. i think i'm gonna buy a 500d for my 70-200. the 1.7 loses a stop and a half of light. with fast lenses you shouldn't have a problem retaining autofocus. keep in mind, the nikon teleconverters are only compatible with certain lenses for af.

I have the 500d and I would say, it's pretty useful. My only complain is that the entire setup became very heavy especially when you use it on a long lens.

i could see that. 70-200 nikkor gets heavy after a short while, but i normally have it fixed to a monopod :)

I found it a little troublesome to use a monopod, especially when I don't have a ballhead to go with it at the moment :-P
