Hi all!

Just thought I wanna share with you that, even with the SB-600, the D70 is able to use Commander Mode to fire the flash.

Of course, the SB-600 is only slave flash-capable, but I had this (mis)conception that only the SB-800 was D70 Commander Mode compliant. [blushing]

Anyway, I'll be playing with the new toys (the SB-800 & SB-600), and see what I come up with. Wish me luck! :P

the d70 used in commander mode can trigger the sb-600. what the sb-600 cannot do, is be used as the master to control other speedlights. hope this helps.

Yup, that's why it pays to have at least one SB-800.

Can SB800 trigger SBx series ? I'm thinking about picking few used 50 or 80X models for aquatic photography.

Not sure about that...might want to consider stopping by your local store and see if they'll let you play with the setup, or rent a set and test it out.

I've got the SB-50DX (on trial from a friend).

Tried it in wireless shooting with the SB-800 set to master - um, couldn't quite figure it out, but it DID fire ... but the shots are crappy exposure-wise (compared to a SB-800 Master + SB-600 Slave setup).

I read the online manual - the SB-800 & SB-600 have Advanced Wireless Lighting capibilities (4-channel sets, 3-group sets). The SB-50DX has 'only' Wireless Lighting capabilities (1-channel, 1-group). Couldn't quite figure out how the SB-800 Master was to control the SB-50DX (ie. To set the SB-800 to which channel? which group?)

(If I find out, I'll post it up!). ^_^

The SB50DX I had, only functioned as a "regular" slave flash, ie responding to an actual flash.

That might be the case. It'll function fine with the SB-800 as a trigger, but most of the advanced flashed system doesn't work (iTTL, etc.).

but most of the advanced flashed system doesn't work (iTTL, etc.).That is putting it optimistically ;-) it'll just flash. the only control you have is setting the output of the flash manually (1/16 1/8 1/4 full)

No wonder my exposure was crappy. [blushing]

Hehe, didn't experiment much with it 'cos was busy with the SB-600 and SB-800. :P

Here is a kinda, "I think I already know the answer", question. When you use the sb800 & sb600 together, do you use the cable between the camera and the SB800 and shoot in commander mode?

AFAIK you can just set them both to the same channel and they'll both fire wirelessly. if you want the sb800 to be the off camera master, than you can use a cable.
