Along with the ST-E2 controller . Any advise on the flash (pros or cons) whould be very much appreciated .
I looked at the reviews at F.M. and it sounded good .
I had no idea that anyone but Canon was making an ETTL flash. Let us know how you like it!

I have a question. I am not very familiar with flashes, but the Canon 420 is cheaper but does not have ETTL2, only ETTL. What's the big deal, why would you spend about $40 more on the Sigma? Specially if you will control using STE2. I am using my STE2 w/my 420EX and it's working like a charm. What am I missing?

Ed,
Because it recycles faster than the 550EX , is just as powerful , maybe more so and costs much less .
Read the reviews here .

that is impressive, so it can control flashes like the 550. I am not 100% sure how that is important in aquatic photography, as you dont really want head on flash (though maybe really diffused just to even out the exposure) but it does seem to eliminate the need for the STE2, no?
Might not be that bad depending on if and how much the head tilts. I've used a SB-800 on the hotshoe and haven't had problems with it. I think that it's due to the slight angle that the flash head is positioned. Taken with the flash on the hotshoe.

I intend to use the Sigma on top of the tank with the STE2 controller . Some of my tanks are 24 and 26" deep. I think the extra power of the Sigma over the 420 could be of benefit . Plus I would have the more powerful flash if I need it for something else .

Ibn, that photo is nice but the color looks a bit "metallic" which is usually the effect of the direct flash. Overhead flash is just SO SO SO superior (as I learned this week). It's not even close. The only way I see the direct flash used, is in conjunction w/overhead, diffused a lot, to even out the frontal exposure a bit, fill in the areas.

Its for that very reason why I use that little Sunpak 2 flash from the side, to provide some side illumination but the main light source is from overhead. The sunpak flash is pretty weak so just provides just a little fill illumination.

ETTL II is a camera function. Not a flash function.
Ed, I have 2 580EX and the ST-E2 with me. You are going to have a blast this weekend.

Benny ,
How do you think this setup will work for me ? Also can I use 2 flashses with the ST-E2 ?

Yup, that's one of the reason why I usually don't use it on the hotshoe. Rather handhold the flash and then snap the picture with my other hand. The photo was just there to show that it can be used in such a fashion.

Yeah, we have to spend another 200$ to get the STE2 controller. :)

Actually, it's a combined function. I have a 550EX and a 420EX and neither one is capable of ETTL-2 even with the 20D.
Schnauzer, the STE2 will control an unlimited number of flashes in 3 groups.
