Hi guys

A critique would be good on this fish. It was taken at teh weekend at Newquay Aquarium through about 6" of scratched acrylic. Any suggestion on how to improve the image in PS would be really appreciated.

hrmm, well the lighting is uneven, really strong on the head and body (appears slightly overexposed), while the tail and some of the other fins kinda lost a little light. also the background color sort of "clashes" with the colors on the fish IMO. i know sometimes we can't control these things in public places though :) just feel lucky they allow flash. other than that - i think this is a very credible attempt considering the circumstances, and it actually looks very clean. if you have some spare time maybe you could try blacking out the entire background. the only problem is the transparent fins - would be a giveaway.

I agree with hir0's comments. The lighting could be toned down. Perhaps a piece of tissue over the flash when you are shooting?

As for working on PS, if you have the unedited source file online, I'm sure you will get quite a few fellas willing to do some work on it for you.

Cheers,

Yeah, I will try :) But really, to all those comments I can add that size of the final image and proper Crop make a difference too. The image is small and makes you wonder how it would look in bigger size. Also, it's VERY tight on the sides, and screams "give me more room". IT would be a good exercise to see this done differently. You can do a lot to even out the exposure. If you want you can email me the file and I will give it a go.

Ok, here is my quick try on my work pc, so it's not the best (small monitor).

Open in PS. Recrop to 3:2 ratio and leaving forward room to show motion. Open Shadows/Highlights and adjust to bring out the fins and remove the overblown part on the head. Easy. Resize, USM, small frame. Done.

nice work on that photo Ed. I think the edit made a huge improvement in the lighting.

I would prefer to keep the highlights in check and reduced the "frontal flash" effect if possible. Something along the lines of this...

The picture was saturated slightly to compensate the loss of colors due to the harsh lighting.
