I sent my Rebel to the store to repair the shutter problem (don't open). And, the store has just informed me that costs $330 to replace the shutter module. Damn.... my slave flash is gone (I've saved some money for it). Just wanna know if anyone know the average life span of the shutter module?

I believe that it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 50k shutter life for both the 300D and the 350. Man, that's a pretty steep price tag for replacing a shutter and for that price I'd consider buying a new 350...

I'll have to agree with Ibn, for that price you should lay out a couple of hundreds and get the 350D.

50K shots..... that is really a pity. If like that, I have to replace the shutter module every year. That's suck. I have to pay around $600 more for the 350D. But, if I want to get a new model I would consider the 20D. I'm trying now to persuade my wife for it.

If you're considering the 20D, then throw this into the equation. The shutter life in the 20D is twice as long as either the 300D or the 350 at 100k actuations. That means that you won't have to spend the extra $330 to replace the shutter (plus save some money from shipping it and down time with the camera). Plus there's significant advantageous to the 20D (#1 being feels better in the hand :) ).

That sounds like a good logic to persuade my wife!!!

I'd go get the 20D. If you've never heard the sound of the shutter on that xt... well...

people complain that the 20D mirror slap is loud. I'd prefer loud of the annoying electronic sound the shutter on the XT makes... its terrible. Quiet yes, but it sounds horrible.

But then i like my cameras BIG.

How loud is it? Is it louder than the sound of the mechanical shutter of SLR? Think the annoying sound is the minor issue when considering the options.

Speaking to pros on other forums, they say that the 1d II has a life of about 150-300K actuations whilst the 20D is between 100-150K . The 1D models cost about $800 !! from what they have been saying - certainly something to factor into your cahrges The 20D is about $650 - $700 from what i have been told. - On the other hand most of the pros there say that they change their gear fairly regularly so don't have to worry about it. It is us amatures that hang onto our gear / buy seccond hand that have the trouble!

its quiet. almost like the shutter on a point and shoot camera. it just doesn't belong on a dslr.

check dpreview. they've got an mp3 of the shutter sound

I really like 20D don't get me wrong. If I was a Canon shooter I would definitely get one but If I was a wedding photographer...... heellll NO. I can't imagine shooting a wedding in church with this camera.

This thing is like a gun. When I was in Houston, friend of mine had his 20D set in burst mode and bracketing mode. It was very annoying. Everyone gave him nasty looks b/c of the noise. I had my D70 in burst mode, nobody looked at me :) Friend of mine switched from Nikon D100 to Canon 20D and the first thing he said "damn this thing is LOUD".

Lisa,
I met Benny in NYC and he had 1D MkII which didn't sound as bad and we were in Museum. I guess maybe burst mode did it

You mentioned mp3 files. Do you have a link ?

link around the middle of the page

the single shutter of the 20D doesn't sound as loud as when its on burst.. then at 5fps it does sound loud.

After a month of inspection by the camera store, they said that the processor module was also died. It's around $700 to fix all the problems. That's it. Now, a 20D is on my desk.......

Btw, the shutter sound is great to me. :-D

Ouch...$700 is more than what a new one costs nowadays. Good call on stepping up to the 20D.

It's too ahead of my planned schedule to upgrade. Now I have to wait much longer to get external flash.

Congrats on the new camera! A huge upgrade from your 300D :) Looks forward to see some new pictures, been a while :)

I'm a little emberassed by the shutter noise with the D70 when I'm in silent places with a event going on. Though otherwise I love that sound! Much better then the fake shutter sounds that's on compacts.

Never heard a D20 shutter though.

EDIT: Just heard the MP3.. That 350D shutter was horrible!

Hmm... I don't find the sound of the 350D or the 20D to be a problem.

CDM, congrats on the upgrade, albeit at the demise of the 300D.

Now I'm a bit worried about my older Digital SLRs. Perhaps I shouldn't hang on to them if I'm no longer using them.

Cheers,

Cheers,

I took more than 50K shots with the 300D, that's close to the average life span of the shutter module. This is a possible reason. Another possible reason is that the 300D encountered a moisture situation. I went to an exhibition of ice sculpture few months ago. When I stepped out the show room, the 300D got moisture all over (outside and inside). I didn't notice that and switched on/off couple times. That probably damaged some components of the 300D. Next time, I'll take out the battery and wait until the camera is dry.

Anyone know the lifespan of the D70's shutter?

Ibn
05-26-2005, 12:00 PM
Approximately 50,000 actuations. Comes out to be about 10k per year, 833.33 shots per month, or about 27.4 pictures per day.

By then, you'll probably want to upgrade to another body or replace the shutter (about $200).

i've taken about 25k shots in the past 8 months. good thing i bought the in-store warranty. it was $50 and for two extra years past the manufacturers warranty. no questions asked. bring it in and they'll either replace it, or if it's discontinued give you the equivelant, or if that still doesn't work - they give me my full money back. :) makes me want to take some extra photos to make sure i break 50k in the next year or so.

Ibn
05-26-2005, 4:41 PM
Dang...that's a lot of actuations in that time frame. I'm only at approx. 12k actuations in that same time frame. That extra warranty sounds like a great deal also. I didn't buy the camera from a B&M, so don't really have that option. At the rate that I'm going at, I figure that by the time that the shutter goes out on me, the D200 should be around. I'll still replace the shutter but will use it as a backup body (probably won't get much as far as resale value for the D70).
