Big Brown just left and I am excited . I stuck this thing on the camera , I had no idea I shake like that . Must have been the excitement .
All my plans for the rest of the day just went out the window .

Congrats on your new purchase. I'm sure it will bring you hours of fun. Lisa can testify that just holding it in your hands alone is a joy.

Given the fact that the lens is F4, and that you are using a 20D, I would recommend only a 1.4X teleconverter unless you shooting outdoors in bright light.

This is the 1.4X that I'm using at the moment. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=220456&is=GREY)The bad thing about Canon teleconverters is that they only work with certain Canon L lenses. And only the Mark II version allow you to stack the 2X on the 1.4X.

If you are considering the Kenko one, I believe it can be used on all Canon lenses, albeit with a slight loss in image quality (compared to the Canon version). But with a bit of photoshop magic, the difference may not be obvious.

Some will recommend that you go straight for the 2X teleconverter and get your lens up to 400 mm immediately. However, with 2X teleconverters, you lose 2 stop of light. The 1.4X teleconverters will cost you only 1 stop of light loss. As such, when you consider the aperture (at F4) and the crop factor (which will affect AF), the 1.4 X will be a much better option. You can always crop the picture for more reach given the fact that you have 8.2 megapixel at your disposal.

As for Kenko vs. Canon, it all comes down to the budget. That extra US$100 give you assurance of a dedicated product. Some will rather spend it on other accessories. I wouldn't.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

congrats on the new lens! it's said to be a hell of a lens. i agree with Benny about going with a canon tc for your canon lens. If i'm not mistaken, the 1.4x will only cost you about a stop of light. shooting @ 5.6 is ok, but i'm sure you'd get better sharpness stopped down to say f8. i'm sure with the 1.4x sharpness will still be good, and @ f5.6 equivalent max aperture autofocus would still be good also.

Great buy.

With 70-200mm lens you could / should produce great quality pictures even hand held. Once you move to 300s you really have to think about tri/mono - pod. You have a lot of fun in front of you.

I can't wait to get 1.7 TC for my 70-200VR lens.

I am really looking forward to giving it a real try Jay . I think its next weekend my daughter is competeing in a horse show . This one will be in two different show rings so the 70-200 will cover everything well .
I just can't believe the difference in clarity and sharpness with this L glass compared to the stuff I got with the camera . I am also looking forward to getting my 1.4 extender .
I have a SanDisk Extreme III !.0 GB card . I think I will need another as well . Maybe a 2 GB. We will be going to Prince Edward Island , Canada in July for a week vacation , then probably again in late August . I don't want to run out of space on the camera . I really hate to buy 3 or 4 CF cards when I could put that money towards glass .

Consider a portable hard drive storage. Much cheaper and convenient. I believe Jay and Aaron also uses it.

Congrats on your new toy. The 1.4x TC is definitely the way to go just for about any lens out there. Great way to extend the reach a bit more and still maintain the quality and speed of the autofocus.

Definitely consider going with a portable storage device. I tested one over the weekend (old PD7X with 30GB HD) and am about to order one for myself. Having that along with 2 x 2 GB Ultra II worked out very well. I was shooting RC cars (fast little suckers) and by the time that I emptied one card the other one was done d/l the files over to the device (each card holds over 300 images at 5 MB each).
