As promised back in April when the D70s was announced Nikon has now released firmware version 2.0 for the D70. This new firmware adds several improvements which were introduced with the D70s; improved 5-area AF performance (especially continuous tracking), updated menu design and layout, new in-camera setup page for PictBridge compatible printers........

I haven't heard any adverse effects. I know AF is better.
Are you sure you still have RAW as your setting ? :-D I doubt that firmware update would increase your space on the card :-D

Thanks Jay. I've updated with no problems. BTW, hir0 is correct about the the size capacity. It just about doubled. I have 178 also available in RAW, 158 in RAW + JPEG basic or 574 in JPEG Normal on a 1g card.
The new firmware corrects for the "incorrect" readings that the camera was providing beforehand. Shooting in RAW, a 2 GB card used to read 187 images from an empty card. Now it reads correctly at 358.

So it's not more shots avialable, just an accurate count as opposed to before?

Noticed this myself. Awesome! Like the new menus aswell :) And the searching focus works better to.

Correct. It's accurate now than before. I can confirm that since I've emptied a 2 GB card before and the shot count was in the 350s.

Much more accurate. Shot a 1gb card today. Right on the money!
i always wondered why it said i have like 94 shots, and 60 shots later it said i had like 50 shots left.

Can I format a card on my camera and download the firmware update to it...and then install it on a different camera. Or does the card have to be formatted on the same camera the update is installed. I am playing golf with a friend tomorrow that has a D70, but is not that knowledgable with the software stuff. I thought I could do him a favor and update his camera.
i just used the cf card with my cf card reader. i didn't format, just copied one file to cf card - did the update, delete the file - copy the next file to cf card, did the update, then delete that file. everything's good.

So the formatting doesn't come into play? I can just copy each file onto two different cards and use them to install on his camera. I thought so, just wanted to make sure before I told him to bring his camera tomorrow.
thanks hir0 :-D

Formatting in the D70 guarantees a compatible file system. I guess Nikon requires it only for legal purposes. So if you have a corrupt file system on your card because you did not format it in the D70 before the upgrade, Nikon is not to blame.
yah, they do recommend formatting. just, i didn't :)
As long as both parts of the firmware are on different cards, I wouldn't worry about it. I would worry more about making sure that he doesn't turn off the power (or runs out of power) before it's done upgrading.
