I have a 5700, and I am having a bugger of a time using it for anything other than really close pictures. The flash is the problem. THe 5700 has a hot shoe to add a flash too, but I generally like to place teh flash away from teh camera at a different angle. I do not have a sinc cord ... yet. I had a coolpix 4500 that I really liked. The port for a secondary flash was different than a hotshoe, and I have a sinc cord for teh 4500... but Nikon went away from tht type of plug with the 5700. Is there a hot shoe adapter that will allow me to use the sinc cord I have?

Also, I have been using an OLD nikon flash from the days before digital photography. I have recently learned that this is a no-no. So now I need a new flash... what should I get?

Can't really help you there without the details of the flash.

However, you can get a standard sync cord for the 5700 - it's a standard hotshoe, and I believe you have a standard flash so you should be able to achieve flash sync.

As for getting a new flash ... well, a fully-compatible flash may give you options such as TTL metering and such, but I doubt you can do much on a 5700 with an off-camera flash.

You can probably ask some of the guys/gals that have used a 5700 with off-camera flash for advice. If not here, try DPreview's forum. :)
