Yowzer!!! my wife keeps asking to keep an orchid. Are they easy to keep, and what is the name of this one, and how rare is it?

Not rare at all, my local orchid grower has plants like this all the time. I lost the name tag but it is a Paphiopedilum and one of its parent plants is 'Jolly Roger'. It is very easy to grow as well. Expect to pay $20 - $30 per plant in bud or bloom.

ps - they LOVE the humidity in the fish room...

I bet my wifes cats would like to eat that...

we have tried keeping plants before but her darn cats always eat them, then of course they puke it up on the carpet. One of these days I will be able to train my dog to eat her cats.

Very nice [smilie=biggrin.gif]

One of my orchids has finally decided it was to send out a new flower spike. Hopefully it will bloom in the next few weeks. I have 5 orchids and lost all teh tags so i can't remember which one is going to bloom. It will be a neat surprise. I'll post pics

I have found that it is really hard to get them to bloom again. I live in Edmonton, AB and in the winter it gets very cold and very dry. Its hard to keep them watered and humid enough, plus in the winter light is very low. I"m going to change my planting media from bark to all moss, as the only one tha tis blooming is all moss and the rest are bark.I need somethign taht will stay wet and humid.

Sorry for the long post :) Nice pic

WOW! [smilie=an9.gif] Orchids are some of the most beautiful plants... [smilie=kewlpics.gif]
I have a huge one I inherited from my plant (and Fish) loving Uncle Steve, it is 2 ft. across and looks like a grass plant. Just thin leaves. I can't get it to bloom and I don't remeber ever seeing it in his yard... [smilie=sad.gif]

Wow, Finz, I thought taiwanese are good at orchid, didn't know US also got very beautiful orchids there. The shot is great, especially like the wild red color.

Thanks CDM. There are many excellent orchid breeders in the US. I recently joined the American Orchid Society to learn more about this fairly new hobby of mine.
