I've been taking a few close-ups of these little chaps recently. They aren't exactly handsome, but this one was really posing - do you think he was showing me his best side?

Hi Alan. i like the composition on this shot a lot. it does look very saturated tho it probably looks this way with the lighting. i've never seen a banded goby like this one (apparently i haven't seen lots of freshwater fish). is this a digital image or film?

Nice looking bumblebee goby you have there, Alan. I like the composition and the narrow DOF here.

Hir0, they're a brackish water species, so that might be a reason why you haven't seen too many of them. They're also pretty small so you might miss them if you aren't first attracted by their coloration and pattern.

I'm still using film for all my aquatic shots. This one was taken 2 weeks ago, with 4 flashguns (diffused) over the tank. The water is light brackish, which seems to suit Java fern very nicely. These little fishes are slow moving, but unpredictable, so they aren't as easy to shoot as they appear.
More photos to come :-D

Alan, it's an excellent shot, I love all bumblebee coloration fishes. I wish I had setups for those. I have a bumblebee catfish (the smaller size one, not the HUGE one that eats everything) and I love the coloration. it looks just like that but it's a catfish. About 5-6" max size. Beautiful fish.

Now, why haven t you tried your D70 for aquatic? I would love to see you try it. :)

I have all the kit I need to take shots like this on film - and no digital equivalents for any of it, apart from the camera body. Actually there is another reason, the clue is in the Articles section - but you'll have to look hard to find it ;)
We sometimes show little children around our aquatics room at college, either at Open Days or when the kids from the creche come on a visit. I always ask them what they think these fish look like and I always get the right answer - it's not just the colours, they are the same size and shape as bumblebees too :-)
