Working with NEF files

I've been starting to play around with shooting raw. The problem is, I use Paint Shop Pro (v5.03) and it doesn't do NEF files. I did install the Picture Project program that came with my camera, but it only has an option to convert the NEF to JPG. Is there a plugin or program (preferrably free) that I can use to convert the NEF files to something like RAW or Tiff so I can do some editing in Paint Shop?

Try Rawshooter essentials, it's free and it converts CR2 files (Canon RAW) very nicely to TIF which you will be able to change to whatever if needed
