I plan on going out on Saturday and hopefully getting a telephoto lens. Unfortunately, I don't have a small fortune to spend (only around $200 - may be able to splurge and spend a little more, but not much).
What are your thoughts on this lens?
70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF (http://nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=5&productNr=1928)
Is it a really horrible lens (I've read mixed reviews) that I'd be better off not getting?
Any others in that price range that would be better?

I'm not that sure about Nikkor version. I do have a Sigma version though. APO Macro. It's a great lense for the price.
I can do a test later on.
in the 70-300mm range, they are all pretty much equal (nikon-g nikon-ed, tamron-LD, sigma). the sigma APO version (http://www.adorama.com/SG70300DANKA.html) is supposed to have more low dispersion elements for better control of chromatic abberations (purple fringe). good luck with your purchase.
No experience with this lens myself. I would however take a look at the 70-210mm f/4-5.6 (the "D" version if you can find one that isn't overpriced; otherwise the non "D", which I own myself) while youre at it, since anything over the 200mm mark on the 70-300mm isn't the best.
You can read more about Thom Hogan's thoughts about the 70-300 here:

I do have the Sigma 70/300 APO macro lense, and I am very pleased with it.

I'm back and I'm broke, but I've got goodies. :D
I ended up getting a used (but in good shape & has a 90 day warranty) Tamron 75 - 300. Plus I picked up a UV filter for it and a set of 3 magnification filters (+1, +2 & +4) for my 18 - 70.
