Hello Everyone,

The APF staff is organizing a new series of articles on Photoshop tasks specifically designed to help photographers. Anything from Borders and Signatures to Blending....

We would like to hear from you. What topics should we try to clarify for you via tutorials.

Remember, please ONLY list the topics you are interested in, feel free to describe what it is you are looking for. This is NOT the thread for explaining to you how to do it, we'll do it via tutorials. The first couple are almost complete, and we'll announce them in the next few days.

Thats great Ed .
Lets see something about layers for one .

Ron, this is what you and I talked about but on a bigger scale and not links to threads. :)

Please clarify exactly what it is you are looking for with layers :)

I don't know where to start Ed . I know nothing about layers at all . I have never used them but people keep doing things in layers then putting it all together .

An explanation on and the uses of layers might do the trick. Sounds like it'll be down Jay's alley. :)

Yeah, Jay is doing one on Blending. So if that is what you mean, it's on the list already :)

Im trying to learn about making 'unusual' frames. such as round, oval, rounded corners, ect. but with transparent square.

One thing in particular that I have been trying to figure out is how to make a circle image and a circular border that is so many pixels out like canvas resize but circular... if that made any sence! lol

hir0

that is a little confusing. can you post a link to an example?

Took a look at one of your pictures and trying to guess what you were trying to do. Are you referring to something like this?

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a68/ebn5/purple.jpg

Here's one with a transparent border (once you save it, the white shows up even though the background is transparent...). Maybe change the background color to the same one that you're trying to match with the rest of the frame.

Scripting and framing would be nice!

Ibn

Framing is already in the works. :) What about scripting would you like to know about (e.g. editing existing scripts)?

A quik name would be enough. e.g (c)2005 Alexander Christensen..
I would also like to know if it's possible to creat the (c) in PS..

yes yes yes! that is exactly what I want to do!
I have 2 photoshop books and neither one touches this subject!

(good idea on the scripting suggestion!)

If you type +Alt 0169 you will get the copywrite symbol ©.
That reminds me of another thing I want to figure out. how to rotate my text to 'fit' the subject.
hehe I can't wait!

Ibn

Should be coming up soon. Hir0 has written something for this sort of stuff and I modified it slightly for the round frame. :)

You might want to do 'how to convert to B&W using channel extraction' Its so much better than basic desaturate. Also, someone might be interested in selective coloring techniques.

I need to know how to put a bubble or circle over a horses head with some writing in it . I gave some pictures to a lady we know from the horse shows . One of the pictures shows her horse just takeing off for a jump with his eyes closed . She just loves the picture and would like to submit it for the pictures at the year end awards banquet . She wants to put in the circle over the horses head --- I can do this with my eyes closed .
Any help would be appreciated .

ron, that is not a tutorial. :) Just choose the Rectangle Tool, right click, choose Oval, choose the color for the background (white) and line (black) and draw it on a new layer. That is all there is to it.

Schnauzer
10-05-2005, 3:21 PM
Thanks Ed . I didn't know but that it might have been included in a tutorial . Then where do you find the letters to type ? In the type tool ? If I can figure that out .

Schnauzer
10-10-2005, 3:27 PM
I absolutly never use shadow/highlights . The screen goes all weird and I can never get to look as good as it did when I started so I just don't go their .
The other tutorials have been wonderful . What can we do with this ?

Schnauzer
10-12-2005, 3:32 PM
OK . I kind of figured it out for myself . I have had the more options clicked all this time and didn't realize it . To many gadgets . I unchecked it it it became so much simpler .
Thanks anyway .

lol, i use the advanced version, it's more versatile, if i can get around to it - and figure out how to explain it... i might give it a shot.

Schnauzer
10-13-2005, 8:43 AM
That would be grear hirO . When I click on shadow / highlight in advanced I can't get back as good as it was before I touched it . You did such a good job showing us how to use layers in cleaning up and removing unwanted things that I use it all the time now .

I have CS and I was wanting to figure out how to turn the word. I want it to read sideways not
T
E
X
T

Make sense?

Ibn
10-13-2005, 5:11 PM
So you want it to read as?

T E X T

or...

T
E
X
T

I think you're trying to get at the second one, but let me know if you aren't. There are pretty simple ways to warp the text, the easiest of which is probably using the warp text selection (top bar which runs across on the top).

tlemetry
10-13-2005, 5:33 PM
I can do both of those... I want it to read from the side. each letter turned 90 degrees ccw.

Do you mean like this, T?

That is simple. Not tutorial length. Type your text. Click on the "move" tool. On the top, check the "Show Transform Controls". Once you do, a box shows up and lets you move it any way you want to. Point on the corner, until you see a curved arrow, and you can then move it around in any direction. Hope that helps. IF you guys think it's worth it, I can put it up as a tutorial, illustrated, in 2 minutes time :)

yeah like that. I know its probably simple and Im just overlooking it somehow.

I will give that a shot! Thanks so much!

I tried Jays blending but the images are locked . I can't add the layers mask with them locked . How do I unlock them ?

paradise
10-14-2005, 1:04 PM
A better question, why are they locked? :)

Schnauzer
10-14-2005, 2:31 PM
I didn't lock them that I know of . So what now ? I don't have the key that I know of .

When I get a good picture it is usually because I took it that way .Sometimes the raw is better than my finished product .I have made big gains in this area lately but have a very long ways to go .Some of the pictures could be very nice with just a little help . Here is where I am very limited . Our tutorials so far have been a big help and I personally have learned a lot from them .
We don't seem to get a lot of traffic in our tutorials post so I assume most are far better at it than I ( it wouldn't be hard ) . Those that have done tutorials have thought them out very well and done a wonderful job of presenting them .
I would like to see a tutorial on curves and ran across this (http://tutorials.shutterschool.com/ps/curves2.htm) today. Maybe we could get some ideas from it . Go to lesson 2 .

I need help with resolution. Maybe my Canon A60 just isn't cut out for high resolutioon photos, but I've been asked to do some magazine covers and simply cannot with this camera. Or is it me??

Ibn
11-18-2005, 12:23 AM
Hmm...somehow I missed your question, Ron.

Ron, if you actually open up a curve, it's just a straight line. What you can do is to alter the curve to increase exposure, contrast, etc. It's a really powerful tool once you start playing around with it. By saying an "S" curve, you're basically altering the top half and the bottom half of the curve to resemble a S shape. It works for some images and not for others; really depends on the images.

As for the question in regards to resolution, the A60 is capable of producing an image that's 1600x1200 pixels at its highest setting. Are you setting your camera to its highest output size? Also, how big is the magazine cover that you're trying to output to?

Worse comes to worse, you can take the image and uprez it. Let me know the answers to the above questions and we'll go from there. :)

I have recently run into a problem with understanding Aspect ratio. I need to change my images to a certain aspect ratio and I have not been able to figure this one out. If anyone can help me with that. I would love it! Thanks!

Ibn
11-19-2005, 2:48 AM
Aspect ratio is just the ratio of length to height (and vice versa). Like when you're talking 2:3 aspect ratio, you're talking about a picture that's 2 inches across by 3 inches tall. It also works in multiples also. So if you're looking at a 4 inch long picture, it'll be 4 inches long by 6 inches tall. If you were to take the same picture and stretch it to 24 inches on the short side, the long side would be 36 inches.

Let me know if that makes sense or needs further clarification.

How about cool black background technique(s)? Is that a masking thing or is the fish being shot in a small container with black background?

Sometimes, but it can be done in camera. I'm putting a new thread about black backgrounds in the Aquatic Photography section.
