hey dude
nice shots...
In my opinion, I think the first one would look alot nicer with a soft black background, but I understand that this isnt always possible as I see the other flowers around it...
agree about the background. What happens as you learn to film for the sake of that great pic, is that you will start taking other things out of the pic, and actually thinking about composition, things like background and lighting, and the pics improve a lot. You can move one flower out of the bunch or move the bunch except one flower, put it where the light shines correctly without making a long shadow, and you can add a dark garment in the background to make it stand out. Also consider playing with DOF in this situation.

reduce the f stop value... ie: larger aperture ..make the depth of field shallow

Just gotta figure out how to. Its one of those digicams that autofocuses when the button is pressed half way down. Not sure how to manually set the f stop.

What camera are you using? We might be able to figure out something if we know which model is that.

What mode are you using when you take the shot? I just went through the user guide and it seems like there is no option for manual control.
If you want to get a larger aperture, maybe you can try portrait mode. If not, I think macro mode will be a good choice. Do give it a try on both modes and see how is the results like.
