Is the SB-29s ringflash worth the money? I know from my underwater macro experience that the closer you get the flash the better your pictures. I guess that's the same above water, but when is the ring flash better than an external sb-800 for instance?

A ringflash is a great macro tool!
It's not that powerfull, but cleans up those shadows well on bugs etc.

I have to experience though. I would like to try one :)

Well, I can pick up one for about 150 euros, considering the price in the shops it's great, but if it's of no use to me, it's a waste of money.

Haven't used one, but have consider it, and done my fair share of research on it. There's a couple of concerns when I looked at the unit. First is the fact that the lighting is a bit flat with the ringflash. You can alter the power going into each light, but it's not significant enough to notice. Lastly, it does not support Nikon i-TTL system.

For the price, I went with another SB-800 instead. :) Much more versatile and powerful. Lastly, I would wait around for a bit if you're interested in such a light. There is speculations of a 4 (!) light macro flash unit in the speculation, and to me this would be a better alternative (it'll support i-TTL to start out with).
