hi Carol. i will give you my honest critique on these shots.
#1 doesn't work for me. the central composition and looking at the rear of the butterfly don't appeal to me much at all.
#2 is an improvement, the image does look very flat though and has some overexposure. it also makes it hard to look at for me because the butterfly is almost upside down.
#3 would be much better without the flower protruding through the head of the butterfly. otherwise it's a very nice crop, and a good shot. the exposure on the flowers are completely blown out though.
#4 has an underexposed butterfly and an overexposed background. i know butterflies don't exactly sit there and pose for you all day long, but if you can try to shoot with the sun to your back. also the dark oof line on the right side in the background is a bit distracting.

another thing is the frames used on #1 and #4. it really doesn't do much to enhance the image, a thin border or none at all would work much better.

these are a very good attempt, my favorite of the four being #3. i really like the perspective chosen. keep shooting these, you can only get better at it. just pay attention to the light, and try not to shoot in harsh sunlight if you don't have to.

I found awesome light to shoot butterflies at around 4:30...this time of year while the sun is on the low side before sunset. Great lighting, soft, and easy for exoposure all around.

I think number 3 comes close, The composition and pose are good but it is overexposed. A stop less would have held more detail in the flowers and given more d.o.f too. I don't know if you had any control over this, it may be a camera problem.
