Someone was considering a wide angle lens for their Canon. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens was thrown out there and although it isn't a wide angle, I thought I'd snap a few pictures comparing the two. Here's a few pictures to compare the Tamron to the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8. All shots straight off the camera with no sharpening. Cropped and resized.

Well, after seeing this test, I'm glad I have the Tamron SP AF 28-75 F/2.8 XR Di. Maybe you'll have to correct me, but it seems the Tamron is as sharp, but maybe slightly less exposure (a little darker). The color tones aren't exactly the same. But I seem to like the contrast better on the Tamron.

How do you feel about the results?

Very interesting . If you look at the markings just above what I would call a black belt the Tamron appears clearer and sharper than the Nikon . The Nikon appears a little lighter .

actually, it looks like the focus is on the head which would lead me to believe that the nikon is a little sharper. and the reason why the things above the belt are soft is because it has better bokeh to boot! anyways, jk they look pretty much the same, except there is a slight yellow cast on the tamron. and look at the background. see those round things from the tamron? what is that flare? no biggie. Eric, are these shot wide open?

Eric,

Hard conclusion. I would love to see few more testing shots and maybe uncropped version.

BTW. I agree with Hir0 about the flare.

Both lenses were shot wide open at f/2.8 handheld. You can definitely see the difference in the bokeh and the flaring in the Tamron. Pictures were cropped due to the differences in sizes between these two lenses. The Tamron is smaller and is closer to the camera body than the Nikon is. Cropped them to display the same images.

Might have to set up a more controlled test for these two lenses a different time.

the tamron seemed to have smoothed out the white things on the sides of the bg better.
