I thought i would add something up here to critique

I was using a long lense at minimum focal distance.

Sorry - I guess I should have asked a question when I posted this up for critique.

Lets see:
1. Does the shaddow under the moth suck?
2. Did I get away with the shallow depth of field?
3. Does the shot as a whole work?
4. Should I buy a proper macro lense to do more macro in the future...

You didn't quite nail it.
I like the picture, good composistion, and it does pop. But the eye is soft.

Got the money, buy a macro lense. Fun, fun, fun!

I'm not too worried by the shadow, but I'd like to see more of the left hand wing. You can never have too much d.o.f. - you haven't quite got enough here.
Alex is right. A proper macro lens is unequalled for this type of subject. BTW, it looks like a butterfly to me ;)
