Does the poor lighting kill this shot?

it doesn't kill the shot, but some fill flash would have made it better IMO. the bird is a little lost in the shadows.

Agreed. A flash here would bring out some additional details and would actually help with the blown background. Also adds a catchlight in the eye.

Agreed with both hir0 and Ibn on the flash part. The burned out portion on the right is also distracting..

And though not obvious, I can see a very slight OOF upon close inspection. ;)

With this kind of crop you should have filled the shadows a bit.
So I agree with the rest.

You might save it with a closer crop though.
