I'm looking into getting a longer macro lens for my insect shoots. I could certainly use the extra working distance and better control of the background with it. What's your recommendation?
Canon 180mm
Sigma 180mm
Sigma 150mm
Tamron 180mm
any more that i missed out?
Thanks. :-)

I think Alan has the Sigma 150mm macro he uses with his D70. Looking at some of his images, that looks like the best value for the quality.
from all i've read they are all winners and you can't really go wrong with any of them. one thing tho, the tamron 180 is designed so the front of the lens can rotate - making easy use of polarizers, the downside is - if you use a ringflash, it will turn on you when you don't want it to.

I just found this thread (http://aquatic-photography.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4111) of Alan's early attempts with his D70 and Sigma 150 for you to check out.

I can recommend the Sigma 150mm - virtually all the zoo and general wildlife shots I have posted here have been taken with this lens. On the other hand, I expect hir0 is right - all of these lenses should perform well, and I doubt if there is any significant difference between the results they produce.
