I'm fairly new to photography and know nothing of "photo talk"
Trying pics with 1 layer of tissue over the flash
Alright, here are some examples of my shots

not too shabby. one thing i'd definitely try is to correct color balance. for some reason the fish's shadow looks purple. these are a great start though. a levels adjustment in post processing might help to bring out some nice contrast in these images.

Something unusual is going on here. What type of lighting do you have in this tank? As hir0 says, it seem to be very purple in colour - but the caves appear to have a green tone. Does it look like this to the naked eye?

A combination of 2 acadia actinic blue + 1 white marine tube (the white tube is the center row)

No,the caves don't appear to have a green tone to the naked eye and the tank looks purple when the lights are on.

Good start with the tissue diffuser.
However, as already mentioned, you have to change or turn those actinic and marine lights off when photographing your fish. It will be hard for you to adjust to the change of lighting when you switch over to the daylights, but the photographs will be more closer to "natural" lighting. I found that splitting my fixtures with 67,000 daylights and 50/50- daylight (10,000)/actinic is a good compromise. I'll only use the daylights when taking photos though.
