I need help

I bought a flash ,the kind that you either hold to the side of the camera or attach to an arm that extends from the cam...

I am taking pics at night with no lights on but the tank...and all I get is reflection of the camera and strap in the images :/

I don't know how to use this flash properly.

Carol, please list the make and model of the flash, it will be easier to assist you.

It's a cheap one,was only like 50$...

and it is wireless

Sounds like a slave that you're using there. Have you tried placing the flash on top of the tank since it can be tripped off without wires?
