I expected the black and white pattern to give a nice effect, but somehow it just does not look right...
Any suggestions to get a better effect?

You have picked a zebra with narrow stripes, so I think you need to be closer (or use a longer focal length) for a dramatic effect. In addition you need a really crisp focus so you can see the indiviudual hairs, particularly at the edges of each stripe.

Agree with Alan, a bit unsteady on the handholding there.

Yes, I noticed the lack of sharpness myself. But you say, there are just too many stripes in the picture to get a dramatic effect?

The top right corner detracts a bit. A crisper image (as noted) would have improved this shot. Keep at it
