OK here's my version (processed with CS2 from your original).

I have re-cropped because I didn't like the paw on the grass, which was quite overexposed. I reduced the saturation and brightness of the green in little tuft of grass that was left, then I increased the saturation of the reds and yellows (but not too much, I didn't want to over-dramatise). Then with the Levels control I looked at the histogram and moved the black slider all the way down (darkening the darkest tones in the photo) and then I lightened the mid-tones to get the face significantly paler than the mane. Finally I sharpened with a little unsharp masking. I think that's all it needs.

Here's my effort - ran it through Photoshop: Adjusted levels, adjustment selective colour (less green, strengthen red), and a bit of sharpening. A couple of minutes work. I'm sure otheres could do a better job - I'm still learning too!

Steps taken were adjusted levels, ran through velvia plug-in to warm a little and then sharpened.

Cheers
