I was playing around with Macro in the yard today and got this shot.

Nice attempt at macro. Was this just done with the 50mm f/1.8 (exif info reads it at 50mm stopped down to f/11). As for critique, take another look at the picture and take a look at the plane where the flower is at its sharpest. To me it looks like it's at the petal in the front left and also on the petal on the right hand side. Drawn a line from the left petal and the right petal and you will see that anything that falls at that distance away from you will be sharp.

With that in mind, it would have been nice if the pistils in the middle of the flowers were a tad sharper and at the same time a fill flash was used to bring out more details. You can also try using a diffuser so that the lighting is softer.

My guess would be the Sigma 50mm ;)
It's a sharp shot, though I believe you missed the focus a bit. Nice composition though.

I disagree with Eric to some extent. I'm no expert in flower photography, but I think that unless you blast this shot with lots of flash (destroying the subtlety of the colours) or pull back so far that it's not really macro - you have to choose between having the yellow stigma or the black anthers in focus. IMHO the anthers are the right choice and they look good to me. I like the tones and the general composition too. Nice work!

Thanks Alan!
I tried reshooting the flower several times and as long as I stayed close I wasn't able to get the stigma and the anthers in focus together so I'm glad for the feedback.
