Geoff, that is a nice fish, and an excellent photo. I love discus but am totally afraid of the idea of keeping them. :) If I am to critique this great shot, just for your future reference, I would look for more of a straight point of shooting, less of a top-down angle.

I like wild discus! In my opinion, wild discus are much much finer than any of the 'man-made' varieties. To be fair, I believe the same is true of almost all species, but the difference in discus (and oscars) is particularly remarkable.
I hope that you do very well with him/her and that you post more photos for us.

Hes a very handsome guy.
Have a strong preference for wild strains myself. Heckels were some of the first discus that I kept back in the days and the patterns on this one is very nice.

As already mentioned. I like the idea of the wilds too. I have seen many of the Stenker and Asian varieties here in the states, but I don't think I have seen any wild caughts. Thanks for sharing and don't stop.

You may want to try leaving the camera in front of the tank for long periods of time. If you have a tripod, place it in the front of the tank with the camera on it. Occcasionaly take random shots. The fish will get familiar with it and may not be frightened and discolor for you. Have the camera there when you feed them. They will get use to it even more as you approach the tank.
Don't share these tips. It's a secret between you and I....;)

yeah i should leave the camera up on the tripod. i did that for a while and he gets semi used to it. only problem i have with doing so is the cat likes to rub against things and with my luck he'd knock the tripod with the camera over.
but im sure his color will get better when i get the pH back down where i want it and the others show up. thanks for the complaments
Great looking wild! Always had a thing for them and I'm quite envious of you! When I was picking out discus for my 6' tank, wilds were out of the question due to unsuitable water parameters so I had to pick some 'wild'-lookalike strains like browns and alenquers instead :-/. Any idea what wild strain he is?

That's a beautiful fish, Geoff. I've been in love with South American cichlids since I was a kid, and discus, of course, are King of the Hill. Some of the "bred" varieties of discus are very impressive, but I have always preferred the complexities of a wild type fish, even back to the wild green swordtails I remember from the early sixties.
I look forward to seeing the rest of your school as they arrive. Thanks for sharing.
