I was trying out the Canon and took these shots. These two are one of my breeding ram pairs...

and both together (not very pleased with this one...):

Nice fish, I have several pairs just like that. You need a bit more light on that tank or a well diffused flash to really get the colors on those.

Hey Kat. You have to diffuse your flash for the most part. The first two shots were fairly well exposed. The last one was too flashed and overexposed. Try using the tissue diffuser. All you have to do is tape some tissue paper in front of the flash. Leave a litttle space between the tissue and the flash lens...you dont't want to scorch anything.
You should cut back on the hot spots with this method.

I like the first shot!
And absolutely agree with Ed and Booby!
Kittykat, there is another very useful Booby’s advice here:

and take more care about the interior elements and background, because as Ed said:
“As you get into photography, tank design for photography becomes a big deal.”
Good luck!

What is clear from your shots is that you have some happy and healthy fish. Love these fish but never had luck keeping them before.
All the shots have good basic composition and the colours are nice. The only thing I would add it to make absolutely sure that your glass is clean inside and out.
Keep snapping.

These are encouraging photos: not quite perfect, but pretty and promising.
The real question is did the camera pass your test? Did you feel in control? Did you have to shoot 150 photos to get the 3 that were worth posting? I'm exaggerating of course, but you know what I mean :-)

the other two went straight to the bin as they were both unfocused.

I like this last one quite a bit. You have an eye for composition, totally, Just try to read up on diffusion so that you can do some more "natural" colors, this shot looks VERY flashed, you see how the colors are all reflecting and look metallic. Do a search of posts by "CaroL", she has a point and shoot camera and she's totally mastered the art of diffusing the flash, her stuff looks like it was taken with a MUCH more expensive camera. And, keep practicing.
