I found a antheraea polyphemus larva in the yard today and it made a great subject for practicing with the macro lens. This was my first real test with the lens and first time using a macro as well. The following were shot with a Canon EF 100mm F/2.8:

Focal length 100.0mm
Exposure time 1/125s
Aperture 25.0
550EX Flash set to - 2/3

The images were resized but not cropped. Is it better to shoot at a smaller image size vs having to resize them or does it make no real difference?

You have captured some great detail there of a strange looking larva. A very good result for your first test of the lens and I'm sure you will have many more hours of fun with it on backyard safaris. The flash seems well controlled in these shots. Look foward to seeing some more.

Very nice. The first is the better IMHO, you have enough d.o.f to show all the parts of the 'business end' of the caterpillar. The composition of the second isn't quite so good as you've sliced the top off. I love the way that the hairs catch the light.
