Hello,

I'm brand new to the non-"point-and-click" camera and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on websites to give me the basics on photography. Suggested books would be good too.

Thanks!

One suggestion would be to look through the back posts in photography 101. Their is a wealth of information there. Some of it not covered anywhere else.

I know very little about this, but I would suggest that the first website you ought to bookmark should be the manufacturer of your camera. I find the Nikon website very useful.

You really dont need much more than reading your manual and then following suggestions on this site, but there are a few good sites out there, like fredmiranda.com, and dpreview.com. What is it you are looking to gain?

If you are looking for a supplement to the manual, the Short Courses (http://www.shortcourses.com/) are pretty cheap, and usually go into a bit more than the manual. They are sort of like the manual but with sometimes better explanations.
If you haven't seen one, you might want to read through one. And there is one specifically for a 350/Rebel XT (http://www.shortcourses.com/bookstore/canon/book_canonrebelxt.htm)...

Thanks for the replies. I'll start with the manual and then look at the websites posted (as well as browse through the forum some more).

I'm looking to gain a basic understanding of the camera before I sit down and "play" with the settings for a while. I can change settings and see the differences but it makes it alot easier to understand and improve if you know what it's supposed to do. Getting guidance on where to look helps out alot rather than manually going through the thousands of google sites that come up on a search.

Thanks again!

try reading up on exposure -- how aperture, shutterspeed, iso work.
a great place to start is this here (http://www.photos-of-the-year.com/exposure/exposure111.pdf)
