thought i'd put a pic of some 2.5" 'ers up.
this is the female. not the best angle as there's a little distortion of shape.
the female shows the black markings high on the back and faint blues, purples and greens.

the last time i had small ones i didnt see color this early. but since both the adult nics and some red hump eartheaters were attempting to breed, there might have been a few more fish hormones in the water.
the male is got the spot and more gold coloration coming in. the orange is on both sexes. juvenile males can fake that stripe down the side under stress or maybe just as a safety mechanism to avoid getting beaten by a dominant male.
