How does this work? Tried to clean up some hot spots...a little soft in some of the legs. This was basically in camera with a crop to get rid of the bullseye effect. I was chasing this individual lots........he most definitely did not like the attention :)

I like it! The light was hitting the spider from overhead about 11 o'clock, but it works, with lots of detail, too. :) You could have used flash, but I think
that would ruin it.

This was with flash. It was shot at about 3 in the morning (had some downtime at work so I thought I'd go "play" in the parking lot). Spur of the moment (I know ....I know...."what were you thinking??!!") . I was probably 5 or 6 inches away from him(her?) with the flash in commander mode hand held. Only angle I could find that the camera could "see" the flash and still hit the subject.

Well, I sure messed that up! Using Commander Mode is cheating!
I'm kiddin'! Nice pic even if you used a lit match to light the shot.:-)

I really like it! Hopefully your spider friend will stick around so you can try some more in the future!
The only thing that could make it better, imo, would be if you could have gotten more of the web to reflect the light.

I like it a lot. The flash has given you good depth of field, but the focus accuracy is excellent too - how did you get it right in the dark?

AF and copious use of the delete function . The focus assist light helped lots.

I'm rather happy with how the eyes turned out. Out of curiosity when I resized I selected bicubic sharpening (as I've recently read from a few sources is recommended when reducing image size) is it too much?

Gord,
I'm sure the thought of how often you clean house is going through some
people's heads, but it looks good. Same specie of spider...how big are
these?
Doesn't look oversharpened to me at all.

No these guys are not infesting my home, these critters are all over the exterior of the building at work. No idea what the species is (I think I'll call it spiderous genericus;)).
With respect to size...all told (legs and all) about the size of a dime or a penny for a big juicy one. They seem to be fond of areas in the lee of the wind and partially lit by road lighting. Soon as the sun comes up they are not to be seen again until dark.
Thanks for the comments
